A Hike on the Dragon’s Back

A Hike on the Dragon’s Back

My wife and I are part of a hiking club that started a couple years ago in Hong Kong. The club consists of my old friends from secondary school, their significant others, and some other friends. Every month our hiking club makes plans to hike a different trail in Hong Kong.

Back in January 2012, just after the New Year, our group went hiking at the Dragon’s Back Hiking Trail in Tai Tam Country Park. We started our day by meeting at the Shaukiwan bus stop. From here we took the number 9 bus to To Tei Wan. When we got off the bus at To Tei Wan we started our hike. From To Tei Wan we hiked through the Dragon’s Back Hiking Trail and finished at Tai Long Wan. The route we took is available here.

We could see very beautiful scenery all throughout our hike. Some of the most exciting views were of Red Hill Plaza, Shek O Beach, Shek O Golf Course, and Big Wave Beach. I’m sure glad I brought my camera with me.

The hiking trail itself is a nice, relaxing hike that brings you through a couple mountains. The air quality up in the mountains is a welcomed change from the smog you get at sea level in downtown Hong Kong.

The pathway of the hiking trail is marked very distinctly. There are also signs along the way indicating an interesting sight is nearby. Tai Tam Gap and Shek O Road are just a few you may want to see. The signs are in both Chinese and English. So tourists will be able to find their way around quite easily.

While walking along the hiking trail we met up with a team of mountain bikers and chatted for a little bit. They were even nice enough to let us take a picture of our group using their bikes.

The approximate time to complete this hike is about 3 hours. It took us about 3.5 hours to complete the hike because we took more frequent stops/rests along the way. There are a few paths which take you off the Dragon’s Back, towards a point of interest. Others may be interested in seeing these points of interest and take longer to finish the hike than we did.

The Dragon’s Back Hiking Trail was a very enjoyable hike with many beautiful things to see. If you want to do some hiking in Hong Kong, you may want to consider the Dragon’s Back.
